Adami/FIFA World Cup, Spain.

Title: “Allegory”

The Royal Organizing Committee, in collaboration with the multinational West Nally and the Maeght Gallery in Paris, commissioned fifteen artists of different nationalities to make the posters that were going to represent the World Cup and the fourteen host cities of the matches in Spain in 1982. This poster represents the city of Valencia, Spain.

VALENCIA: “Allegory”, by the Italian Valerio Adami (1935). An artist who combined three major artistic currents with the fragmentation of cubism, the forms of futurism and the aesthetics of Pop Art, cinema and comics, giving his work a highly decorative language. In the World Cup poster there is a total predominance of red and yellow colours applied on flat and rounded surfaces, thus making reference to the host country. These surfaces and the strong lines that outline the shapes are characteristic of Adami's artistic production in the 1980s. Regarding the motifs, the winged ball is particularly striking, making reference to chance as the main element of the game. Under this central motif, feet appear similar to those of a classical sculpture due to their posture and the greaves they wear. These are an important element as they are a fundamental anatomical part in football practice but also due to the historical association of Greek culture with sport. Finally, the head of a man and the name of the host city complete the poster.
