San Isidro festival in Madrid, Spain.
Title: San Isidro festival 1959
Original vintage advertising poster promoting “San Isidro” festival in Spain
Scene depicts a smiling young woman with a white cloth on her head, which is part of the traditional female way of dressing on this festival (see picture 2 and 3 in real life). The poster uses three colors: red, white and black, which is an aposematic combination that makes us unconsciously pay attention because in our evolution as a race these colors are associated with dangers in nature (see last picture).
On the other side, people dance in this festival “Chotis” which was originated in Bohemia and became popular in Europe and the American continents. In Spain, the chotis, chotís or schotís is considered the most typical dance of the Madrid since the 19th century, and it is danced in all the traditional festivals.
Did you know…?
Every year on and around May 15th, Madrid honours its patron saint, San Isidro Labrador, with a packed programme of events featuring concerts, shows and an endless range of activities for all ages. Tradition meets modernity in the week-long festivities that see Madrileños dress up and dance chotis in the streets and enjoy picnics with friends and family in the Pradera de San Isidro Park.
