Zaragoza (Spanish FIFA World Cup), Spain.
Title: “The god of the stadium”
The Royal Organizing Committee, in collaboration with the multinational West Nally and the Maeght Gallery in Paris, commissioned fifteen artists of different nationalities to make the posters that were going to represent the World Cup and the fourteen host cities of the matches in Spain in 1982. This poster represents the city of Zaragoza.
This poster was designed by the Belgian Jean-Michel Folon (1934-2005). A heterogeneous artist, he dedicated himself to illustration, painting, sculpture and was a great fan of architecture. This last facet of his can be glimpsed in his work through the rotundity of the forms to which he managed to give weightlessness thanks to chromatic degradation. The color green predominates in the poster, which invades almost the entire work representing the playing field; and the color red that is concentrated in the name of the host city, the goal and the ball. Possibly, the use of red in these motifs, especially in the goal and the ball, is due to the fact that they are the determining elements in a soccer match. On the other hand, the playing field represents a figure holding the ball, which can be interpreted as a player - who with the ball can shake the mass of spectators by creating scoring plays - or as a referee, who is the judge of the match and who can also tip the balance towards one side or the other.
